The suggestion by Robert W3CD to work the VFO variable cap trimmers back
and forth solved the frequency jump problem. Before turning the trimmer
screws I warmed up the rig and connected a frequency counter to the VFO
output, then set the VFO output to a known frequency (5300 Kcs in this
case). After working the screws back and forth the last steps were to
equalize the tension on the two trimmers and adjust them until the VFO
frequency was back to where it was set. The trimmer screws did not return
to the same setting, they were about 1/8 turn different which may or may
not be good. (I haven't bothered to see if the VFO is accurate across the
dial.) The difference in operation is quite amazing. Great list, great
listers and thanks to Robert.
