The premise wasn't radio waves being trapped in a solar flare. According to
the special features section on the DVD (which has sections on ham radio,
solar phenomena, time travel and firefighting; if you haven't seen it, go
rent it - it's fascinating), the original premise was a black hole. The
radio waves got sucked in and were spit back out "somehow". The director
changed it to a wormhole, allowing two points in space-time to touch. The
wormhole was apparently triggered by the same solar flare that caused the
aurora borealis. Wormholes ARE allowed by relativity, and could account for
such phenomena as ghosts, telekinesis, and even communication across time in
our 11-dimensional universe. Scientists are now using string theory to link
quantum mechanics with relativity, and such things fall out as possible. I
think it'll be an interesting century in terms of discoveries about our
universe.
