Hello!
I have just received a couple new HPRs (Heathkit Project Radios ;-))... One
is an SB-102 with an HP-23A and the other is an HW-101 with an HP-23C. I
will deal first with the HW-101 and will let the SB-102 for next millenium ;-)
HW-101 is in the 29xxx serial number range and has lots of components dated
mid 1979... I have the invoice of the original owner (who sold me the rig,
so I am only the second owner) dated October 1980. And the power supply is
a 'C' model, so I wonder if that unit is close the end of the production.
Any hint?
Well, yesterday I opened the HW-101 to find it has some rusty spots, mainly
in the 'wheels' (what moves the air variable capacitors by means of belts)
and in some other metal parts. I did a preliminary cleaning with 3M
TarniShield metal cleaner and the results were good. Another thing I
noticed is that the aluminum knob skirts are in bad shape; thay have a
worm-looking damage. It is as a white oxide below the anodized surface and,
of course, it can't be removed. It is a pity, as the front panel and covers
are in very good shape... Are there any spare knobs available in somebody
junkbox?. Please, let me know.
I got the HW-101 and HP-23C for only about US$67, shipped, as the set was
in unworking condition. Former owner (and builder) tried to fix it but was
not able to do it. Problem is that he tried some component substitutions in
a PCB which is far from easy to work on, as it is the one just over the
band selection wafers. What he did is to cut old components and solder new
ones on the old legs... it is a poor job and it seems difficult to reach
the old component legs from the bottom side and rework it, but it should be
done in order to have again a good looking set.
The set innards are now dusty but a careful cleaning should leave it in
good condition.
So now I will try to redo the modified zone and then I will start
troubleshooting. I will let you know what I find.
Best regards and Merry Christmas!
JOSE
