Decal removal

Hi Gang: couple of quick questions for you  restorers out there.
1. What is the best way to remove the metal decals on knobs, eschucherons,
and face plates and will GoGone do the job?
2. What is the best way to clean and polish the aluminum knob skirts and knob
inserts?  I have a few that seem to have turned yellowish (cigarette smoke,
perhaps) and want to clean them up?
