Just another note on this subject that I haven't seen mentioned. I used to
grind crystals too, and it's real important that you keep the thinkness
consistent on the four corners where the lands on the metal plates contact
the quartz. Using figure eights helps, but I always turned the crystal 90
degrees every few strokes as well, and compared the corners with a
micrometer before reassembly. I never had too much luck with lowering the
frequency with lead - it didn't take much to dampen the crystal to the point
where it wouldn't take off.
