HW101 SSB

Hi:

  I am new to this list and already have a question. While operating my
HW101 on the 20M band on SSB last night, everything was going ok until I
answered a CQ call and someone told me that there was a squeal in the
audio. At this time I noticed that the ALC indicated downward instead of
upward when I called on the microphone which is a D-104. Has anyone
experienced this problem before and can give me some guidance?
