Ed,

A standard stepper motor isn't what you want to use. First of all, they have
very little torque, and you don't need that kind of resolution. There is
another kind of motor made for this application that is basically a
solenoid-ratchet affair that causes the shaft to rotate 30 degrees with each
activation. Ledex use to make them (and may still), and I've seen them in
surplus catalogs, and have a heavy-duty one around here somewhere. They have
a double-flatted shaft that fits standard rotary switches.
