EK> Joe, many situations might have occured to get a person a wired unit. 1. Sometimes
the company actually made them for sale and these were noted in the catalogs. 2. If a
person sent a unit back to Heath because they couldn't get it going, the factory would
look at the rig for general condition of assy., perform some basic checks and see if they
could get it going with minimum of service. If not, the unit was sent to the famous
"salvage house" across the street from the plant for employees (and their spouses) to
purchase at a greatly reduced cost or 3. If the unit was made was made for the showrooms
of remote location stores in the US. When the unit went out of the catalog, these units
were allowed to be sold to the public. I am a bit surprised at "red paint on most
screws". The LMO had red paint on the screws as it came as an assy.
My wife was a "Former Ham at Heath" and worked the Wired Instruments group and provides
majority of this input. Her group was responsible for doing the models for the stores,
among other things. I think there was a LMO mod kit that came out during the SB-102's
life and may also have included VOX. Folks like Ed Mosher will remember this much
better.
I hope this helps some.
