I could not aggree with you more.  I built Heath test gear mainly for
the experience of buildiing and aligning my own gear as a young
electronics hobbiest.  It was not until some years later as a broadcast
electronics maintainence tech that came in contact with really good
equipment IE: Tektronix and HP, Fluke, etc., that I realized I would
have been much better off buying used surplus professional gear at about
the same prices I paid for new Heath stuff and I would have had much
better equipment for my bench.  Heath came up with many circuit designs
that were just plain poorly executed and would not align or stay
stable.  It was as if their design engineers just did not get out much
to see what was going on with the designs of other equipment makers.
Well this is just a recollection at this point as it was many years ago
now.
