I, too agree with Phil, Allen, and George. Heathkits still are great learning
tools and there is amatuer radio history and tradition there, if not to build,
just to maintain/repair which is generally within the capabilities of the
average ham's available tools.........if the desire is there. And the stuff
works well (minus all the superfluous bells and whistles) even by today's
standards. ....and they are FUN to use......and this is a HOBBY not a
highly cometitive state-of-the-art-or-die business. If I want to "just talk
to someone"........I grab a cell phone.

Talking about hands-on fun, one step further is homebrew as with those
of us who built/build HBR Receivers and others..... check out the HBR
web site at http://www.inetport.com/~talen/ for some roll-up-your-
sleeves and get the ol' soldering iron hot fun. Sorry about the blatant
unabashed promotion of another cool web site. But the tie-in to Heath
is "building it yourself".
