Heathkit Glory

After reading Randy's stories about repairs at Heathkit, I can't help
but tell what happened when I brought in to a Heathkit store my SW-717
shortwave receiver.

The diode regulation in the power supply was not working properly when
first built. This unit uses two transistors in series as diodes in the
power supply. The technician could not figure out why the transistors
were not regulating properly. So he decided to put FOUR transistors in
series in the power supply.

Maybe he reasoned that if two transistors were not working properly,
let's put double that amount in.

Well obviously this arrangement did not work. If anything it made it
worse. I never heard of a circuit where four transistors or diodes were
in series. I eventually had to send it to the Heathkit head office for
repair. They removed all four transistors, and replaced them with the
required two. After that, the unit worked fine.

Harvey.
