Kit horror stories

My first kit I built was the Dynaco ST - 120 power amp. I assembled it carefully, visually checked
EVERYTHING Five times - Then took a step back - held my breath - and turned on the power
switch. A little blue flame appeared out of the top of the chassis [it's perforated]. Of course I didn't beleive my eyes!! So I shut it down - bewildered. After a few moments [an eternity] I tried again. Same result. I ended up sending the output board back to Dynaco - it was a faulty transistor feeding too much current through a resistor!
