     The rational was that the resistors, and capacitors, were needed to
balance out the voltage drop across each diode.   This was required due to
the differences in the diodes.   This is also the reason that another list
member recommends using diodes from the same production lot.   If one diode
gets to much voltage across it, it will fail and likely take the rest of
the diodes along with it.
     I have seen posts on another list recently that say the resistors and
capacitors are no longer needed since the state of the art has increased to
the point that the differences in the diodes are so small that they are no
longer a problem.   

    You can be the judge.
