That reminds me of what an old timer told me long ago: the only good way to test tubes is
by direct substitution. Of course, in those days, tubes were plentiful so it wasn't a
problem. Flash forward to the present when some tubes are both rare and very expensive
and it's nice to have a tube tester. Still, whenever there's a problem with any tube-type
gear, it's always correct to suspect a bad tube first and then verify your suspicions by
substitution, if a tube is available.
