Thanks guys, for all the useful info on troubleshooting my problem with the scratchy noise thru speaker, HW-101.
Learned a lot on audio amps! Joe Sloss, K7MKS provided the crucial info that lead me to suspect the problem was before
the audio amp. Found a bad 1 watt 22k resistor on the IF board (read 44k!) and a weak 6AU6 at  IF amplifier V3. This old 
radio works great.
