Dropping them can dammage them.Also damp ness and 
high voltage or RF will dammage them.

use a frequancy counter.
I have a SWR/power crystal test center.
works great on crystals .just plug in a crystal and counter
and read freq.
I havent seen anything like that in years.

Try a VFO in place of crystal.watch output of VFO.
also check any tunning caps that may be on crystal circuit to trim freq.dirt or dampness can render the OSC circuit not working.
I have been threw that with a outher rig.BAD trim cap.
