chrome knob deposits

I have a couple of Heath units that have the silver colored chrome, or
metal looking knobs on them..  (e.g. apache, SB 10, mt-1 had those type
of knobs on them).. anyway, I have notice on some of those knobs there
is a deposit or covering that is similar to a hard water deposit on a
faucet.  Anyone else ever have this anamoly on their units?  Have any
idea what it is?  And if so, what have you used to remove it?  Silver
polish maybe... or just plain soap and water?  Looking for comments
before I try anything..
