Use of SB-610 and SB-620

Hi Ed,
Although I have both units, I have only the -620 connected to the receiver
(A SB-301) so my comments are only from the manual. The difference between
the two connections is that the -610 connects at the far end of the IF strip
whereas the -620 connects at the output of the 2nd mixer, at the input side
of the crystal filter and IF amp.
One problem with the SB-620 / SB-301 combination is "suck-out" of the
crystal filter at the center frequency. As you tune toward a signal, its
display height decreases to near zero as the signal approaches the passband
of the filter. A way to lessen this effect is to install a transformer in
the plate circuit of the mixer. I used a "T201" transformer from a junk
SB-100 with has a low-Z link as a secondary. The co-ax from the SB-620
connects directly to this link with no capacitor. I'm away from my
documentation but if you are interested, I can respond with more details.
Hope this helps,
73, Stu W6CUX
