"I considered the US version a dog."
I remember, as a high school student, trying to decide between the
DX-60/HR-10 and the HW-16. I had the opportunity to try the pair, and I was
not impressed. In spite of the extra bands, and phone with the "twins,"
the HW-16 just seemed like a better rig. Price had some impact, $ 81.95 for
each for the tx and rx (1970) vs. $ 109.95 for the HW-16. I finally bought
the HW-16. Even now when I use my HW-16, I think it is pretty good (my
other rig is a Drake C line), particulaly on 80/40 meters.
So I guess I have to agree with Floyd, I just didn't think the receiver was
that hot. I've been a little surprised about the demand for the
DX-60/HR-10 pair. My two cents. Tom W6EIJ
P.S. On another note, the electrolytics are leaking on the HW-16. I was
thinking that it might be better to use replacements with a higher
capacitance - any ideas how much I could increase the values?
By way of comparision, on my Drake receiver, I installed Rob Sherwoods
filter kit (replacement power supply board and new capacitor board), and it
is amazing. Even when my tube radios were new, I remember that
"after-buzz," for some time after I finished operating, from listening to
headphones for hours at night. The buzz was, I guess, a 60 hz hum.
Sherwood fixed it on the Drakes; it would be nice to accomplish the same
thing on the HW-16.
