HW-101 audio distortion

  I've got a HW-101 running pretty good, except
I notice on some strong signals the receive audio is
distorted. If I de-tune the driver control to lower the
signal level the audio cleans right up, if I turn down the
volume the audio remains distorted. This only happens on
strong signals, is this typical of this rig, or should I be
looking for an AGC problem? The S-meter works fine, and
everything else seems fine on transmit.

 I'm wondering if BFO injection to the product detector may be down?
