SB-301/SB-401 in transceive mode

Hello fellow Heath fans,
I have a set of SB twins that were acquired from different places and I have cabled them up for transceiver mode per the manuals. They both have full crystal packs and I used the recommended RG-62a/u interconnects. I can operate in transceiver on 20 meters but received audio is distorted (slightly garbled) while transmitted reports are ok and 40 and 80 are totally off frequency on receive. 
    Since the units were not a pair is it possible that an alignment in the transceiver configuration would cure the problem? 
    Receive is fine on all bands when interconnects are removed, Thanks for the bandwidth,
