Tuning the HW-12A and HW-32A

Hello:
I have been having trouble getting enough of a carrier to tune the
monobanders.  I am new with Heathkits so I so need some help.  I have no
trouble tuning my Kenwood
TS-520 and TS-830S.  Able to inject a carrier loud enough to move the meter.
I am using a MFJ 941E tuner.
How can I increase the carrier on the monobanders? Or
am I missing the whole point on how to tune.  I see that there is a tuner
slot on the back and a small knob on the
motherboard.  Thanks for your help and please answer me off the LISTSERV at
