Group,
I talked with my neighbor the mold maker last night and it's his opinion
that the part wouldn't hold up being all plastic, even with modern
materials and that the zinc casting insert would be a bugger to get made.
So, I don't know about getting these things re-pro'd. He says that
making the mold and doing the injection of the plastic parts would be
fairly simple (for him!). He also said that the metal collars could be
inserted with a simple arbor press, although they would need to be
indexed some how. (He tried to describe to me how an automated process
would work to do the insertion, my eyes just rolled back in my head,
grin.)
Maybe I should start taking up a collection for old broken levers to
scrounge the inserts from :-).
I wonder who made the originals and if the mold is still around? Now
-that- would be something! Any of you OT Heathkit factory guys know
anything about who made the knobs?
BTW, if you ever get a chance to see how molds for plastic injection are
made you will be amazed at the craftmanship that's put into them.
