Another SB-104A Question

I think the unit is working correctly, however there seems to be low gain in the mic amplifier circuit.  With a Kenwood MC-50 and another 50K ohm mike, I have to turn the mic gain all the way clockwise to get any ALC during normal speech.  Output seems to be correct.  With a D-104 mic, it seems to be at about 12:00 for normal ALC action.  Is this normal - what is the best mike to use?  Are there any mods to increase mic gain?  The MC-50 seems to work much better with the HW-101.
