The more friendlier applications, during
installation,
allow you to select which file type
associations to "take over".
One can change the associations within
Windows Explorer by
clicking on <Tools> <File Types> and
doing an edit for each
extension (.gif, .jpg, .tif, etc.) or to
delete any association.
It may seem cryptic at first but is all
done in menus.
The neat thing of associations is that
Windows automatically
opens the application for you whenever
you double-click on the
filename, otherwise you must open the
application first, then
select which graphic file to view, not
always an easy task unless
you have all the files in one directory.
Graphic view programs such as ACDSee
have a provision (menu) to
(de)select file-type associations within
the program itself, at any time.
