Chuck, thanks for the reply.
I am suspicious that the cabinet for the IM-1 Intermod Analyzer is the same cabinet that had been designed, even produced, for the early (1948) transmitter.  The IM-1 cabinet is unique, larger than the common square cabinet used for the SQ-1, etc. and yet has LOTS of room inside.  I think the Heath engineers would have used the SQ-1 cabinet for the IM-1 except, if my suspicions are correct, they had the old transmitter cabinets on hand.  Not many IM-1's were ever produced.
A two inch high chassis would have left nice room inside the IM-1 cabinet for 1619's and Heath had a bunch of them from surplus.  Hence my guess that they were intended for the oscillator and modulator.
I realize that this is ALL speculation but maybe it will jog a little piece of information loose from someplace that can be built upon.
