The book is wrong or you may have missed some special notes:
The 6L6 has a internal cathode to grid 3 connection.
With class A or B circuits using the EL34 in most circuit cases pins 1 and 8
are tied together.
If you have a 6L6 or 6550 amplifier that is using the socket pin 1 as a
tiepoint (like a 47k bias isolation resistor) you will be in for a nasty
surprize.
