Svetlana, The Machine

Svetlana was established in 1889 as a light bulb factory. As of 1999 the
company employed over 10,000 people in St. Petersburg Russia. Like other
tube factories around the world, (Chinese, Yugoslavian, etc.) Svetlana
manufactures a whole range of products from TV's to toasters, as well as
glass and metal tubes for broadcast, x-ray, and audio uses. This
diversification means that a plant will never shut down due to lack of sales
from one of it's offerings (Ex: tubes).

In 1992, with help from the Defense Enterprise Fund, the Svetlana factory in
St. Petersburg formed a joint stock company with R&G International (better
known in the audio world for Audio Glassic tubes) called Svetlana Electron
Devices (SED). SED was set up to distribute broadcast tubes and audio tubes
throughout the world. During the summer of 2000 SED stopped shipping tubes
from their headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama due to a series of money
related problems they were having with the factory.

In January of 2001, it was clear that SED would not be shipping any tubes
any time soon, several offices closed

The Svetlana 12AX7

To settle some of the rumors that have gone around about the Svetlana 12AX7
you should know that yes, there is one, but as of April 2001, it is still
not ready for release. The earliest possible release date is June of 2001.
The samples tested were box plate construction
like the Mullard CV4004 type. It is a high quality tube. However, early
samples seem to have too high of a grid to cathode leakage.

UPDATE .......... 2 or more US offices still closed
