GR-78 Batteries - Question

Hello everyone,
Just picked up a working GR-78 that has weak batteries. These are the
orignal Ni Cads and although they hold some charge, it is not enough. Very
quickly the sound diminshes and when I plug into the AC, I get hum as if
the batteries are not charged enough to provide filtering.

What is the solution? Has anyone installed an internal AC supply and just
used that? If so, whats the power suppy output? Should it be 12vdc or 9.6??
Is there a replacement solution for the batteries??
