If you're looking to build a radio that you can actually use, there are lots
of good QRP kits out there.

You can build things like the Tuna Tin II (300 mW transmitter), or you can
build something more versatile like the OHR 100 and 500, the Wilderness
NorCal or Sierra, or the various Small Wonder Labs kits.  Most of these kits
are priced at less than $100, with the more expensive kits being around
$200, but they come with all parts, boards, etc., at the higher prices.  If
you really want a neat rig to build off-site in a week or two, then my
recommendation would be to look at the Elecraft K1, especially with the new
4-band board.

The simpler kits will give you a rig with as good, or better, specs than the
HW-8, while the more sophisticated rigs such as the Elecraft K2 will have
receiver performance and features that matches or exceeds most commercially
available equipment.
