Several weeks ago I posted that I needed info on finding a variac for
one of my IP-5220 Variable Isolated AC Power Supplies. I thought I'd
post my findings to this list in the event that someone else had one of
these (or possibly an earlier model) and needed to replace the variac
that controls the output AC voltage.

Allied Electronics (4711 Queen Ave, Harrisburg, PA 17109 TEL:
800-433-5700) is one source I located. The Heath IP-5220 uses a 3
Amp/120 VAC Staco Energy Products Company Series 291 variable auto
transformer. Allied stocks these, which are a drop in replacement: Part
Number 927-3291 and the cost is approximately $75.00 plus s/h.

You could always try contacting Staco directly at: 301 Gaddis Blvd,
Dayton., OH 45403 TEL: 937-253-1191 and see if they will sell directly
to the consumer.

These old Heathkit variable supplies are probably the most important
piece of equipment on your test bench besides a DVM! No need to let one
sit idle for the lack of a variac.

OBTW: the reason mine blew out was one of my students over fused both
the 1 amp and 3 amp outputs! Fuses are a lot cheaper than a $75 variac!
Needless to say his GPA is now suffering accordingly.
