D'Arsonval meter repair

First of all, before you go to the trouble of trying to fix the meter,
make sure the needle is not stuck. Hold the meter in your hand with the
front facing you and give it a quarter turn twist and back. See if the
needle swings easily. If it does, check the continuity of the movement.

This is tricky and MUST be done carefully. You need a DVM with a LOW
POWER OHMS scale. DO NOT use a Simpson 260 or some such; you can easily
ruin a good movement. If the meter is open, look for a replacement
meter.

If the meter in question is a readily available type, and the meter
scales are what make it unique, you can scavenge a working meter and
switch the scales. It's a tricky operation, but a lot easier than
repairing the movement itself. You almost have to be a jeweler to do
that. Just make sure that the basic movement rating is the same; i.e.,
0-1 ma F.S. or whatever the old meter is.
