Hi Mark...
Those things CAN be soldered back onto the "shaft", of course, assuming your
buddy hasn't lost the disk...
I once had one that was literally "spinning its wheels"---the disk was on
the shaft OK, it just wasn't secured to it properly (i.e. the shaft would
turn, the disk wouldn't).
A minor touch-up with the soldering iron & solder fixed that up post
haste...
