However, the comment that I replied to was that you
tune ALL of the pre-1975 equipment, not just the
TS-520, for maximum output which is definitely wrong!
I did point out that the manuals for some equipment do
tell you to tune for "maximum smoke", although those
transmitters are in a very definite minority.
It has been a while since I have had my hands on a
TS-520 and the manual (I did own a TS-520 for a short
time that I traded off since I am not a big fan of
transceivers, prefer the separate transmitter /
receiver combination that allows you to transceive if
you need to), so I can't say what the "proper" manual
tuning procedure for the TS-520 is. But, to say that
you tune all of the boat anchor transmitters for
maximum power output will get you into trouble in a
hurry!
It is possible to over load the finals of almost any
tube-type transmitter that is tuned for "maximum
smoke" and not for power input within the
specifications of the tubes.
For me, I definitely tune for input power since I
don't like having to "fork over" for replacement
amplifier tubes on a regular basis. Other people do
like to go for the maximum power output no matter what
the effects on their final amplifier tubes.
As such, I stand on my previous comments about the
proper way to tune tube type transmitters.
