Maybe I misunderstood someone's reaction, but it is NOT a stupid
troubleshooting approach with a Heathkit - it may be with a commercial piece
of equipment...some people call this a 'shotgun' approach, as you don't
actually find the problem.
It was actually an accepted method at Heath when necessary - troubleshooting
Heath kits is a totally different animal - one never knows whether it was
EVER working properly, so component by component inspection, verification
and resoldering can actually save time - if components were installed in the
wrong places, charts, and subdivision of the signal flow tells you
something, but multiple errors and failures are not uncommon.
Often enough one can tell from the nature of the email request for help that
little troubleshooting has actually been done, but where someone has
actually done some troubleshooting and thinking and is still stumped, I
still feel it is a useful tool.
