Use Of 6146Ws In SB-400

There are two possible scenerios: The first is that
the 6146W tubes that you obtained are the equivalent
of the 6146 / 6146A (which the earlier versions are,
the later versions of the 6146W are 6146B
equivalents). The second is that your particular
SB-400 happens to "like" the 6146B equivalent tubes.
Both are completely possible.

Since the SB-400 neutralized and, I hope, is staying
in neutralization after a week or two of operation,
then it will be fine. However, if the tubes do not
stay neutralized, then you should go back to using
what you know are 6146 / 6146A type tubes.

The majority of rigs that were designed for the 6146 /
6146A tubes do not "like" the 6146B tubes. But, there
are definitely exceptions. The neutralization "test"
is the best way to determine if the 6146B types will
operate properly in the older equipment. If the final
"neutralizes" and if it stays "neutralized", then use
of the 6146B type tubes will not normally do any
damage to the equipment. But, if they do not
neutralize or the neutralization "creeps", then you
are putting out spurious emissions and the tubes may
either overheat or the neutralization components may
eventually be destroyed (this happens in the older
Collins 32S3 and KWM-2 series equipment before the
changes to allow use of the 6146B took place).

As a "rule of thumb", if you use the 6146B tubes in
rigs designed for the 6146 / 6146A series, make sure
that the rig operates correctly with the 6146B in
place. If there is any discrepency, then go back to
the 6146 / 6146A.

I would be interested to hear what others have to say
about this: if they've encountered problems in their
SB-gear using 6146Ws
