SB-401 dial drive (LMO)

I have a strange condition with the dial drive on my
SB-401 and thought someone out there could enlighten
me.

When I run the dial from end to end I appear to be
hitting the stops prior to covering a full 500 KHz, in
fact it's more like 450 KHz.  I thought at first the
drive was slipping but if I remove the knob and use a
screwdriver to operate the LMO shaft directly, I get
the same result.

Any suggestions?
