dial slippage

it takes about three times as many revolutions of the knob for the dial to
travel
a certain distance than it should normally take.  when i turn the knob, the
dial
will move, then it will slip until the dial is turned a little bit more,
then it will slip
some more, then it will turn a bit, and then it will slip some more....
