I don't know for sure, but an "educated" guess would
be that the addition of the electrolytics came later.
Probably to reduce hum in the transmitted audio.  You
might be able to tell if you look at the schematic for
the DX-35 which used similar modulator circuitry.
That schematic is available from BAMA.
