The absolutely best thing I've found is a spray called "KABOOM" . It is a
shower, tub and tile cleaner sold through Home Depot and others.  Simply spray it
on, wipe with a soft cloth and rinse well with water.  It makes the copper
look brand new and then it solders as if it were brand new.
