How do you tell PNP from NPN

Take a VOM in the resistance measurement mode and put
the negative lead on the base. Connect the positive
lead to either the emitter or collector. If you get a
relatively low reading then the transistor is PNP
("point in pointer" on a schematic). If you get a
high reading, reverse the leads, if the reading is
lower then you have an NPN transistor ("not pointed
in" on a schematic).

Do any of you know a sure fire way to tell if a
transistor is NPN or PNP?
