Variable caps

You need to remove all of the dust and dirt from the
plates of the variable capacitor. This can be done
with a new medium sized paint brush (1 to 2 inches
wide) and air flow (you can use the exhaust from a
vacuum cleaner if yours is so equipped - otherwise
blow very hard! There are also cans of compressed air
available for this purpose). A conductive grease
isn't usually needed in this case. In any case, the
conductive grease must only be applied to the bearings
of the variable capacitor and definitely not to the
plates.
Make sure that the plates of the stator do not touch
the plates of the rotor. If this happens, the
capacitor will short out and the receiver will cease
to receive properly (if at all - depends on which
section is shorting out). The same thing will happen
if you get conductive grease on the plates.

The cap is quite dusty and dirty. Would some
electrically conductive grease help in this case also?
