HI Z Microphone

A "hi Z" microphone usually has an impedance greater
than about 50,000 ohms. The most common types of "hi
Z" microphones are either crystal or ceramic in
nature.

A D-104 has a "hi Z" cartridge although most of them
manufactured during the last decade or two have an
amplifier built into the stand. Using the amplifier
works very well with the Heath gear. I have installed
a switch that switches the amplifier in and out of the
circuit. My Collins S-Lines don't really like using
the amplifier but all of my Heath SB-Line (and the
HW-101 is basically the same except for the fact that
it uses a "normal" VFO instead of an LMO) like the
amplifier much better (have SB-101, SB-110A, and
SB-401). My DX-100 and Apache don't seem to like the
microphone one way or the other.

Thus, either look around for a ceramic or crystal
microphone or else find one with a preamplifier built
in. Any of these should work fine.

Does anyone know approximately what impedance “hi Z”
is implying with Heathkit?
