An old trick

For what it's worth, an old trick that was taught to me by a very learned gentleman is to connect a #47 pilot lamp between the transformer HV center tap and ground.  This acts as a fuse with a 150 MA trigger to protect the precious transformer.  I have a National NC-173 that has been running with this setup for quite some time and no problems.
