What also works is to use a PL-259 UHF male connector.
Cut off the center pin until it is under 1/4 inch
long. You can use a reducer for RG58/U coax in the
plug to make things "neater". The outside of the
PL-259 fits the old Amphenol connectors perfectly.
There was a "Hints & Kinks" entry in QST back in the
late 1950s about this.
The connectors are actually "male" even though they
are certainly not like the more common phone plugs,
etc.
