For a brief comparison of the 3-400Z and 3-500Z and similar tubes, go to http://www.rfparts.com/tubecomp.html. Basically, the differences in the 2 tubes is available output power, 400 vs 500 watts. Here's a quote from referenced web page:
"EIMAC 3-400Z The Original grounded grid triode introduced in the early 1960s. Now obsolete part number. Power dissipation: 400w.
EIMAC 3-500Z Later version of 3-400Z having larger fins for the increased power dissipation of 500w. Slightly larger body requires minor changes to fit where 3-400s were used. Requires heat dissipating connector."
Naturally, when using the 3-400Z tubes in place of the 3-500Zs, be careful not to exceed recommended plate current for maximum output.
