Dale,
These transmitters are designed to operate either by themselves as a
stand-alone unit, or as a 'transceiver' when connected to the matching
Heathkit SB-series receiver.
Just follow the manual instructions for "Transmitter Operation Only" on page
112 of the SB-401 manual (available from the BAMA website if you don't
already have one - http://bama.sbc.edu/heath.htm ).
I use my SB-400 as a stand-alone transmitter - works great!

When trying to test a SB 400 or SB 401 for power out, do you have to have
the receiver connected to the transmitter.
Also I am looking for a SB 650.
