Filament to grid short.

"One of my
30 year old Eimac 3-500Z tubes (in spite of my babying along at
500 watts output on CW) developed a filament to grid short
thus blowing the RFC-5 RF choke in the grid circuit."
This posting reminded me of the same problem I ran across
a number of years ago. The tube was shorted and I needed
to test the amp. I charged up a large electrolytic and, with the filament warm, discharged the cap across the filament and grid. The short burned away and I was able to use the tube for many years.
I can't guarantee that it'll work every time, but it worked fine for me.
John.
