Pot shaft binding

Sometimes,in stubborn cases,it is necessary to take the pot apart and look
for corroison on the shaft where it passes through the bushing.You may find
a whitish,powdery substance;if so,remove it with 400 or 600 wet and dry type
sandpaper,followed by a still finer grit of paper,if shaft is not perfectly
smooth now.
You may need to use a solvent with the sandpaper,also.
And...you may need to sand inside the bushing,too.

What is the best stuff to lubricate a pot shaft that is binding? Suspect it
has sprnt some time in cold storage.  WD-40 helped and it is movable but not
free.  Thanks for any suggestions,
