SB-401 GRID readings?

I am tuning up and SB-401 in to a good 50 Ohm oil cooled Cantenna load.
When I have the meter measuring GRID, I can see the needle pull negative
when the MIC/CW gain is a little too low.  Why would this happen - has
anyone seen this?  Does it make sense at all?  The meter only goes from
0 to positive values.  Yet, I see it 'pegging' to the negative (below
zero) at times.

If everything were tuned up and running fine, in theory what should I
read on the front panel meter's GRID setting when I switch the SB-401 to
TUNE?
